COLUMBUS, Ohio-- The Ohio State women's soccer team completed an opening weekend sweep of Ohio teams after blanking visiting Kent State, 5-0, at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium Sunday. The Buckeyes improve to 2-0-0 overall (0-0-0 Big Ten) on the year and have outscored their opponents, 10-2. KSU slips to 1-1-0.
"I'm pleased to have 10 goals in our opening weekend for a team that is not known for its offense," Lori Walker, OSU head coach, said. "I also am pleased with the number of people who have contributed. Anytime everyone gets to play, it helps the team morale."
The first half was closely contested as the two squads went into the halftime break with the Buckeyes up 1-0. Brynn Catino (Sr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) notched her first goal of the season on a breakaway through the defense. Heather Miller (Fr., Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) collected the ball about 15 yards deep in the Buckeye half of the pitch and threaded a pass through two defenders to a streaking Catino who carried the ball the top of the 18 yard box and struck the ball to the lower right corner for the lead.
After the intermission, the flood gates opened. Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) tallied her team-high third goal of the season in the 59th minute to give OSU the 2-0 advantage. Liz Mumley (Fr., Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge) recorded her third assist of the year when she lifted a pass to a waiting Grubb seven yards away from the goal. Grubb directed the ball in with her head to the top left corner.
Fifteen minutes later, Emily Thorpe (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) scored her first goal of the year when she broke through the defense and punched the ball into the lower left corner of the goal. Kiley Enmark (Jr., Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) followed two minutes later with a goal off a free kick five yards from the endline. Jen Miller (Jr., Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) lofted a pass to Enmark who shot the ball past KSU goalkeeper Lindsey Mitchell to give the Buckeyes the 4-0 lead.
Catino, with less than three minutes remaining in the match, found the back of the net for her second score. Emily Gilbert (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain) was awarded the assist after she passed to Catino on the free kick. Catino blasted a shot that went off a KSU defender and into the goal.
The Buckeyes pushed the ball into the Golden Flashes' end of the field frequently but pushed too hard at times as they were whistled for offsides 15 times.
"The offsides is a situation where we are pushing the lines and trying to get numbers forward to attack." Walker said. "We have some young players up top that don't quite know the timing. I am not surprised their timing is a little off. Fifteen offsides is a little more than we would like to have but I like the fact we are pushing forward and attacking."
On the defensive side of the ball, Jen Heaney (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) faced three shots and made one save to secure a shutout in the first start of her career. KSU's Mitchell recorded three saves on 19 shots.
OSU returns to action in a 7 p.m. match with No. 15 Connecticut in Storrs, Conn., Friday in the UConn Classic. The Buckeyes next home match is Sept. 14 against Bowling Green at noon.
