NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Two Irish starters recorded hat tricks and another netted two goals as second ranked (NSCAA/Umbro) Notre Dame pounded Ohio State 9-0, Thursday night at Alumni Field.
Preseason All-American (Soccer America) Anne Makinen started the Irish off early, blasting the first goal into the lower right corner from 15 yards out in the sixth minute. She scored two minutes later on a free kick and again in the 12th minute, taking a pass and slicing inside the Buckeye defense.
Jenny Streiffer, a preseason All-American and member of the U.S. under-20 team, scored the first of her three goals in the first half and put up a pair in the second. Her second goal came seven minutes into the second half when she dribbled through OSU's back line from the left side and slid the ball past Amber Barnes (So., Fairfield, Ohio). Streiffer chipped a ball over Barnes' head from 10 yards in the 72nd minute for Notre Dame's ninth goal of the day.
Irish forward Monica Gerardo tallied a pair of goals and Shannon Boxx scored another. Makinen put up 10 shots while Streiffer recorded seven.
Offensively for Ohio State, Becky Borchers (Sr., Dayton, Ohio), Katie Martorella (Jr., Englewood, Colo.) and Katy Traeger (Jr., Littleton, Colo.) each recorded one of the Bucks three shots while Barnes notched 13 saves.
Two true freshman started the match for OSU as Emily Thorpe (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Elisa Hamilton (Westerville, Ohio) were each carded in the opening lineup.
