Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener to Oakland, 4-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio--The Ohio State women's soccer team lost to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies, 4-1 in its season opener Friday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

The Golden Grizzlies hit hard and fast, scoring the first goal in the 13th minute of play. Erica Demers scored off a pass from teammate Ashley McGhee. Kristen Luoma was the offensive leader of the game, scoring two goals from a total of four shots. Her first came at 34:35 off a penalty kick. Luoma added her second and Oakland's third goal of the game at 45:56.

Emily Thorpe (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) netted OSU's lone goal in the second half at 58:48. Oakland's final goal of the game came in the 65th minute of play. Shelly Piccirilo scored off an assist from Gail Wilson.

The Buckeyes outshot the Golden Grizzlies 16-11. OSU goalkeeper Amber Barnes (Sr., Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) saved three shots in the losing effort.

Ohio State will face Syracuse at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 27 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
