Women's Soccer Drops 2-1 Decision to Butler in Season Tune-up
Aug. 23, 2001
COLUMBUS, Ohio-- The Ohio State women's soccer team took to the pitch for the first time this season in an exhibition match with Butler, but fell to the host Bulldogs, 2-1, at Varsity Field in Indianapolis, Ind., Thursday. Emily Thorpe (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) tallied the lone goal for OSU in a match the Buckeyes statistically dominated.
BU took the lead at the 36 minute mark when Terea Rhodes pushed the ball past OSU goalkeeper Jen Heaney (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton) into the right side of the net. Heaney posted one save during first half action while teammate Anna Mitchell (So., Canton, Ohio/Jackson) also tallied one save during her time in the second half.
Down 1-0 at the break and with 14 minutes remaining in the match, OSU tied the score when Thorpe collected a pass from Lisa Grubb (Fr., Portage, Mich./Portage Central) and moved in on the Bulldogs goalkeeper, Amber Stauch. Thorpe went in alone and put the ball in the net to give OSU new life.
The Bulldogs immediately battled back, though, and took the lead again, this time for good. BU's Clayr Mimikos moved the ball into the Buckeyes' defensive zone and shot the ball into the net from 20 feet out to secure the victory.
OSU was clearly the aggressor in the match as the Buckeyes led the Bulldogs in shots (17-4), corner kicks (8-1) and being whistled offsides (6-0). OSU also collected three yellow cards to zero for BU.
The Buckeyes open regular season play Friday, Aug. 31, in a 5:30 p.m. intrastate battle with Wright State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The OSU men's program follows the women with a 7:30 p.m. match against West Virginia in its home opener.
