Ohio State Comes Back to Earn 1-1 Draw Against Marquette
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State played to a 1-1 draw against Marquette in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
The Buckeyes had a solid opportunity less than three minutes in as freshman Danica Wu, in her first collegiate start, weaved between a pair of Marquette defenders but her shot drifted wide left.
Taylor Madigan put a shot on goal late in the first half for the Golden Eagles but that was it in the way of opportunities in the first 45 minutes as the teams headed into the break in a scoreless tie.
The pace picked up to start the second half as Marquette had a pair of shots in the first five minutes then Paige Maxwell nailed a shot for the Buckeyes that sailed wide left. The Buckeyes had another golden opportunity in the 58th minute when Tiffany Cameron got in between the Marquette defense but goalkeeper Natalie Kulla got the best of the 1-on-1 chance.
Marquette was able to break through first in the 79th minute when Lisa Philbin lofted a shot over Ohio State goalkeeper Katie Baumgardner's head for the go-ahead goal. However, less than five minutes later, the Buckeyes tied it on Aly Walker's first career goal after Tiffany Cameron made a nice run along the goal line and made a perfect feed to Walker inside the six-yard box to tie the match and force overtime.
Less than two minutes into the extra session, the Buckeyes had an excellent chance to win it but Wu's shot sailed just high. With three minutes remaining in the second extra period, Kristen Niederhaus had her chance but her shot from the center of the box deflected of the right post and out of bounds.
For the game, Ohio State held a 14-11 advantage in shot but the Golden Eagles put five on goal compared to four for the Buckeyes.
The Buckeyes (0-1-1) hit the road for the first time this season to take on Pittsburgh Friday at 7 p.m.
