Women's Soccer: Ohio State Hosts Kentucky Wednesday

Columbus, Ohio The 16th season of Ohio State women’s soccer commences at 7 p.m.  Wednesday in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium as the Buckeyes host Kentucky in an exhibition contest. The match will be the only competition outside of practice for coach Lori Walker’s club before beginning its regular season at UW-Milwaukee Wed., Aug. 27.

There is no charge for the game against Kentucky.

Twenty-eight student-athletes were on the field for the team’s first practice of the season, Aug. 16. The group includes three seniors and two juniors with 23 sophomores and freshmen comprising the bulk of the team. Six players were season-long starters last year: GK Lauren Robertson, M Ashley Bowyer, F Lisa Collison, M/F Alex Burzynski, D Courtney Jenkins and D Lauren Steuer.

Lori Walker is in her 12th season as head coach of the program. She has a 119-92-18 record with Ohio State. Her teams have made four NCAA tournament appearances (2002-03-04-07) and won the Big Ten Conference tournament championship twice (2002 and 2004).Walker is assisted by:

  • Associate head coach Greg Miller, a driving force on the staff who is in his eighth year;
  • Assistant coach Glen Tourville, a veteran ODP and Division III head coach who joined the staff in August; and
  • Spencer “Deuce” Bownas, who is in his fifth season as an undergraduate student manager.

Ohio State went 12-10-1 last season and finished fifth in the Big Ten Conference with a 5-5 mark. The team played a difficult schedule with 11 games against teams that would qualify for the 2007 NCAA tournament. The  Buckeyes advanced to the championship game of the Big Ten tourney and subsequently were rewarded with their fourth NCAA tournament berth in the last six years.

The Buckeyes won their first 10 games of the 2007 season in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium to set a school record for best 10-game start. The team finished with a 10-2 mark at home.

The Buckeyes are 59-26-7 all-time at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The facility opened for soccer in time for the 1999 season. The last five years Ohio State is 40-9-5 in the facility.

Kentucky, coached by 17th-mentor Warren Lipka, is coming off a10-7-3 season in 2007. The Cats were 4-6-1 and fifth in the SEC Eastern Division. Eight starters return from that team. 

Gone from last year’s Ohio State team are four seniors who helped the team to bookend NCAA tournament berths (2004 and 2006): Lara Dickenmann, who finished her career as one of the greatest soccer players ever at Ohio State; Keiana Mitchell; Amanda Ball and Carla Arbulu. 

Ohio State plays its first two regular season games on the road: Wed., Aug. 27 at UW-Milwaukee and Fri., Aug. 29 at Marquette. Ohio State's 2008 home opener is set for 7:30 p.m. Fri., Sept. 5 vs. Charlotte. The game will be the first of seven consecutive home games for the Buckeyes.
