COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State Buckeyes have been ranked No. 24 by Soccer Buzz Magazine in its preseason poll. It marks the first time in program history they have been named in that publication's preseason rankings.
The Buckeyes join fellow Big Ten teams Penn State (No. 4), Michigan (No. 14), Northwestern (No. 20) and Minnesota (No. 23) in the poll. OSU will take on each of those teams this season in addition to two other preseason Top 25 teams - No. 15 Texas A&M and No. 25 Syracuse.
Coming off a 1998 season that saw them reach the finals of the Big Ten Tournament, the Buckeyes return 10 of last year's 11 starters. Included in that group of returners is goalkeeper Amber Barnes (Jr., Fairfield, Ohio), who eclipsed OSU single-season records last year for goals against average (1.07), shutouts (9.0) and consecutive shutouts (five). Also returning are Melanie Vierling (So., Cincinnati, Ohio), who was second on the team in points a year ago with 15, and defensive standout Katie Martorella (Sr., Englewood, Colo.).
The Buckeyes open their season Thursday, August 19, when they travel to play Oakland University. OSU will play its first game at the new Jesse Owens Memorial Complex Sunday, August 29, at 1 p.m. against Wright State. Tickets can be obtained by calling 292-2624 or 1-800-GO BUCKS.
