COLUMBUS, Ohio Ohio State senior midfielder Lara Dickenmann has been named to the preseason watch list for the Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious individual award in intercollegiate soccer. The list, announced by the Missouri Athletic Club, was compiled by a panel of coaches from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
Dickenmann, an All-American in 2004 who ranks among Ohio State’s all-time top five in career assists (3rd with 21) and career points (3rd with 73), is the first student-athlete from the women’s program to be named to the Hermann Trophy watch list.
“Lara getting named to the Hermann Trophy watch list is indicative of everything positive that is happening to Ohio State soccer,” Lori Walker, Ohio State’s 11th-year head coach, said. “Future players will see that Ohio State can develop the top players in the country.”
Dickenmann, from Kriens, Switzerland, burst onto the collegiate scene as a freshman in 2004 by setting team single season records for goals (13), assists (12) and points (38). The Buckeyes had their finest season ever that year with a 19-4-1 record that included a Big Ten tournament championship and three wins in the NCAA tournament before a quarterfinal loss to UCLA. Dickenmann was named national freshman of the year and first-team All-American by Soccer Buzz, while the NSCAA awarded her second-team All-America accolades. Last year, Dickenmann was All-Big Ten and first-team All-Great Lakes Region (by NSCAA and Soccer Buzz).
“It is a terrific honor for Lara to be named to the Hermann watch list,” Walker said. “She is arguably the most well rounded soccer player in the college game with a knack for scoring goals and the vision to place an assist. This honor extends beyond just Lara, though. This will be a tremendous responsibility for the team to perform well, to outwork other teams, and to position Ohio State to be Big Ten champion and an NCAA tournament contender.”
Walker and assistants Greg Miller and Stephanie Gabbert will welcome their team back to campus for the start of fall practices Aug. 14. A Scarlet and Gray scrimmage is set for 4 p.m. Aug. 16 at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. A scrimmage against Wake Forest will be Aug. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Jesse Owens, and the regular season begins Friday, Aug. 31 at 12 noon against Butler. The Butler match will be the first of six-straight home matches to open the Buckeyes’ season.
