Jillian McVicker Signs with Romanian Club Olimpia Cluj

COLUMBUS, Ohio Jillian McVicker, a senior on the 2016 Ohio State women’s soccer team, has signed to play professionally with Romanian club Olimpia Cluj. McVicker, who graduated in December with a bachelor’s degree in journalism, was a four-year letterwinner, four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection for the Buckeyes.

“My lifelong dream of becoming a professional athlete officially has come true,” McVicker said. “I’m humbled and blessed for the opportunity to continue my soccer career internationally with Olimpia Cluj. It’s been a journey with many twists and turns but everything up to this point has led me to where I am now.”

The Metuchen, N.J., native, who saw her Buckeye career cut short after a devastating injury last September, will be leaving July 9 to join Olimpia Cluj for Champions League play. Olimpia Cluj will find out its Champions League group stage opponents Friday with preseason camp beginning in Austria July 14.

“I’m so excited to start this new chapter and extremely thankful for everyone who believed in me through it all,” McVicker added. “I’d like to thank Ohio State and Coach Walker for giving me an incredible four-plus years, Michael Beatty for working tirelessly to find opportunities for me and my goalkeeper trainers Paul Blodgett and Lubos Ancin for preparing me for the professional level.”


 

 

McVicker played in 68 career matches, including 44 starts, in goal for the Scarlet and Gray. She tallied a 27-17-7 career record to go along with a 1.09 goals-against average and her 181 career saves rank fourth in program history. McVicker was a member of the Big Ten All-Freshman team and was named Defensive Player of the Big Ten Tournament after going 8-1-2 with a 0.57 goals-against average in 2012. She posted a season-high six saves in a 2-1 win over Illinois in the Big Ten championship game that season and went on to share TopDrawerSoccer.com Player of the Week honors with her sister, Jourdan. Prior to her injury, McVicker tallied a 1.38 goals-against average with a shutout and 34 saves in 10 starts as a senior in 2016.
