Columbus, Ohio - Ohio State defender Melissa Miller, a sophomore-to-be in 2004, became the first Buckeye to be named to a women's soccer national team event Wednesday, as the Cincinnati native was invited to train with the United States Under-21 (U-21) team April 14-25 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The 11-day training camp includes two games between the U-21 squad and the U.S. Women's National team, which currently is in residency camp in preparation for the 2004 Olympic games in Athens, Greece.

Following the 2003 season, Miller (Cincinnati, Ohio/ Colerain) joined a distinctive class, as she became the second Buckeye to earn All-America honors in the 10-year history of the Ohio State women's soccer program. An All-Big Ten recipient as well, Miller contributed to a record-setting Buckeye defensive unit as OSU established an all-time team mark in goals against average and number of goals allowed in one season. Miller, who also added support on the offensive end with six points on two goals and a pair of assists, led a defense that allowed just 17 goals in 21 matches, which calculated to a 0.77 goals against average this season. The two marks shattered the previous Ohio State all-time record of 24 goals allowed in the 1996 and 1998 seasons and bested the 0.86 GAA mark set in 1998.

Lori Walker, Ohio State head coach, expressed that Miller's invitation is not only a testament to her ability, but also to the heightened level of play at Ohio State.

"Our program is extremely excited for Melissa," Walker said. "We are so proud of her accomplishments. A call to compete on a national scale is well deserved. The invitation not only is indicative of her development as a player, but also of the Ohio State program as a whole. It is one of our main goals to develop players at levels of competition worthy of the national team."
