Ohio State Women's Soccer Celebrates 2002 Season

Columbus, Ohio - The Ohio State women's soccer team was recognized at center court during halftime of the Ohio State-Purdue men's basketball game Saturday at Value City Arena for its landmark 2002 campaign. The Buckeyes, who claimed the program's first Big Ten Tournament title and initial berth to NCAA Tournament action, also held the team banquet celebration Sunday at Ohio Stadium.

Among those receiving awards for their outstanding efforts throughout the 2002 season where senior team captain, all-Big Ten selection and NCAA Academic All-American Jen Miller, who earned not only Most Valuable Defensive Player, but also team MVP as she led a Buckeye defense that allowed lass than 1.5 goals per contest. Miller, the 2002 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Tournament, is a multiple winner of each award as she garnered team MVP for the second straight season, while meriting defensive honors for the third consecutive campaign.

Receiving the Most Outstanding Offensive Award, also in her second straight season, was scoring leader forward Lisa Grubb. Grubb tallied seven goals and a total of 17 points for the Buckeyes this season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Haynam reaped most improved player honors as she entered a starting role in midseason and guided the Buckeyes to wins in six of her nine starts.

Senior defender Becky Broering earned the Elisa S. Hamilton Gift of Fury Award for her outstanding and spirited effort in 2002, while sophomore Heather Miller merited the Coaches Award for her significant contributions coming off the Buckeye bench.

Several other student-athletes received awards announced prior to the banquet as seniors Shelley Besson and J. Miller and sophomores Haynam and Erica Nollen took home Academic All-Ohio awards, while Miller, Grubb and freshman Danielle Dietrich were recognized by the All-Ohio Soccer Association for their play in 2002. ###Go Bucks###
