Prince's Goal Lifts Buckeyes Over St. John's 1-0

Bloomington, Ind. – The Ohio State women’s soccer team edged St. John’s, 1-0, Sunday Morning in Bloomington, Ind. With the win, the Buckeyes improve to 6-1-1 while the Red Storm falls to 6-1-0.

“I am very proud of our squad today,” Ohio State head coach Lori Walker said. “To be put in a situation to play a rested team on a Sunday morning was unfortunate. We stepped up to the challenge and played very well as a team.”

Ohio State took the early lead once again when Nichelle Prince gathered a Michela Paradiso throw in, turned and fired a shot into the upper left corner for the Buckeye advantage in the 23rd minute. The goal marked Prince’s fifth of the season and fourth in her last three games.

The Buckeyes continued to possess the rest of the first half, outshooting the Red Storm 10-6 over the first 45 minutes, but took the 1-0 lead into the break.

Things stayed quiet until the final minutes when Deana Murino played a nice corner into the box for the Red Storm. Amy Marron was able to get her head on it but Buckeye goalkeeper Jillian McVicker was able to get a hand on it and cleared it out of the box.


 

 

For the game, Ohio State held an 18-15 lead in shots, including 4-2 on goal, while tallying a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Rachel Middleman and McVicker each played a half as the Buckeyes’ notched their fourth shutout of the season.

Ohio State opens Big Ten play at 5 p.m. Friday against Illinois at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
