First Varsity Eight Named Collegiate Crew of the Year by Rowing Magazine
Dec. 4, 2014
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State’s national champion First Varsity Eight was named Collegiate Crew of the Year by Rowing Magazine in its “Best of 2014” issue.
The crew secured Ohio State its second-consecutive national team title in 2014, finishing the season with a perfect 12-0 record after crossing the finish line first in 6:44.48 at the NCAA championships, a boat length ahead of second-place Brown (6:48.47) and third-place California (6:48.51). In doing so, the crew claimed its first-ever individual national title and became the second-consecutive Ohio State crew to finish a season with a perfect record.
“For the Ohio State program to pull off back-to-back championship runs in arguably the country’s most competitive league is a fantastic accomplishment,” the magazine said. “To cap it all off with a varsity eight victory made the 2014 season all that much more sweet for the crew from Columbus.”
Five members of the Varsity Eight – Claire-Louise Bode, Victoria Lazur, Holly Norton, Ashley Bauer and Catherine Shields – were named Pocock All-Americans by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association. Shields also collected Female Athlete of the Year honors from both Ohio State and the Big Ten Conference.
