World Rowing Championships
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Four members of the Ohio State rowing team will compete at the 2016 World Rowing Championships Aug. 21-28 at the Willem-Alexanderbaan Rowing Regatta Venue in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. All four individuals will be competing on the U-23 teams.
The four Buckeyes competing will be Cassandra Johnson (8+) for the United States, Rachel Engel and All-American Stephanie Williams (8+) for Australia and Laura Monteso Esmel (lightweight 2x) for Spain. All four Buckeyes were members of the 2015 NCAA Championship team and are Academic All-Big Ten and CRCA National Scholar-Athlete performers in the classroom.
Johnson is a 2016 NCAA and Big Ten Champion in V8, a 2015 silver medalist in 2V8 and was selected as a spare for the 2015 U23 United States National Team.
Engel is a two-time NCAA and Big Ten V8 Champion (2015, 2016) and is making her second appearance as a member of the Australian U23 squad. She also is a member of the 2016 Ohio State Rowing Leadership Council.
Williams, a three-time NCAA and Big Ten V8 Champion (2014-16), was a 2016 First Team All-Big Ten and All-America selection. She also helped the Buckeyes to the NCAA championship in 2014 and was a member of the 2012 Australian Junior National Team.
Monteso Esmel, a 2016 Big Ten Champion (3V4), was a member of the 2012 and 2013 Junior National teams and is making her third appearance on the U23 team after also competing in 2014 and 2015.
The eight-day event features U.S. crews in 20 under 23 events including the men's and women's single sculls, lightweight men's and women's single sculls, men's and women's double sculls, lightweight men's and women's double sculls, women's quadruple sculls, lightweight men's and women's quadruple sculls, men's and women's pair, lightweight men's pair, men's and women's four, lightweight men's four, men's four with coxswain, and men's and women's eight.
