COLUMBUS, Ohio – Three Ohio State rowing Buckeyes have been named to their respective countries’ Under-23 teams that will compete in the 2009 World Rowing Under-23 Championships July 23-26 in Racice, Czech Republic. Anniken Ellingsen, a rising junior will row for Norway and incoming freshman Regina Pieroth will compete for Germany. Former Buckeye Claudia Wurzel, who graduated this spring, will represent Italy.
Ellingsen will row in the lightweight single and Pieroth’s efforts will be served in the lightweight quad. Wurzel, who was a three-year letterwinner for Ohio State from 2007-09, will row in the straight four. Wurzel and the Italian team will look to repeat as U-23 champions as they captured gold in 2008.
As preparations get underway for the coveted event, regatta organizers have registered 1,200 participants from 56 countries. The largest contingents hail from Germany with 100 rowers, followed by the United States with 90 rowers. France will have 54 representatives and Poland will bring 50 athletes to Racice. Host Czech Republic will bring 30 rowers to the event.
