Bode, Norton Earn Silver Medals at World University Games

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior Claire-Louise Bode and freshman Holly Norton earned silver medals Monday at the World University Summer Games in Kazan, Russia as members of the South Africa Women’s Coxless Four.

The South African crew placed second behind the Russian Federation (6:59.92) by 5.34 seconds, crossing the line in 7:07.44. Ukraine clocked in at 7:09.66 to round out the top three teams. The Czech Republic placed fourth in 7:13.45, while Italy and Belarus placed fifth and sixth with times of 7:13.70 and 7:20.41, respectively.

The South African boat advanced to the Grand Final after earning an automatic bid with its first-place finish in the first preliminary Saturday. The crew sounded the horn in 6:59.13 to place ahead of Belarus (7:01.98) and Italy (7:07.35). The Czech Republic finished in fourth place in 7:07.96 while Poland placed fifth in 7:07.96.

A 2013 Pocock First Team All-American, CRCA First Team All-Central Region and First Team All-Big Ten honoree, Bode led Ohio State’s first varsity eight to a 9-3 overall record throughout the 2013 season, including a gold medal performance at the 2013 Big Ten Championships and a bronze medal finish at the 2013 NCAA Championships. The Johannesburg, South Africa native was named the 2013 Big Ten Rowing Athlete of the Year and the 2013 Ohio State Female Athlete of the Year.

Norton, a Second Team All-Big Ten honoree, was also a member of the first varsity eight that clinched the 2013 Big Ten Championship for Ohio State, its fourth Big Ten title, after placing first in the final race of the morning to tally 63 points toward the team total and championship record 160 points. At the 2013 NCAA Championships, the first varsity eight placed third, amassing enough points to hold off California and earn Ohio State its first NCAA Championship.
