May 20, 2015
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Top-ranked Ohio State swept the Big Ten's year-end individual honors as voted on by the conference coaches, the league announced Wednesday. Ashley Bauer was named Big Ten Athlete of the Year and Sarah Davis Freshman of the Year, while head coach Andy Teitelbaum collected his third-consecutive Coach of the Year honor.
Bauer, from New Albany, Ohio, rows in the five seat of the Buckeyes' undefeated and Big Ten champion first varsity eight. In her third season with the 1V8, Bauer has helped the boat to a 24-0 record overall and 12-0 mark in races this season. A member of Team USA at the 2014 U-23 World Championships, Bauer is the third Buckeye in a row to be named Big Ten Athlete of the Year and fifth overall, joining teammate Catherine Shields, the 2014 winner, recent graduate Claire Louise Bode, the 2013 recipient, Ninett Kossowsky (2006) and Conny Kirsch (2002). Bauer was also named to All-Big Ten First Team at the conclusion of the conference championships on Sunday.
Davis, a native of Dunlop, Australia, rows in the varsity eight's sixth seat. A Second Team All-Big Ten selection, she is the fourth Buckeye to be named Freshman of the Year and the first since Shields in 2013. Annabelle Fago earned the honor in 2004 and Phaedra Giblin in 2000.
Teitelbaum, the only head coach in the 20-year history of the program, collects a record sixth Coach of the Year award, his fourth in the last five seasons. Teitelbaum coached the Buckeyes to a third-consecutive Big Ten title this season, a meet-record 186 points and wins in six of seven finals. Ohio State's varsity boats finished the regular season with a combined 32-4 record overall.
Ohio State competes at the 2015 NCAA Division I Rowing Championships May 29-31 in Sacramento, Calif.
