No. 2 Ohio State Advances to 2014 NCAA Championships
May 20, 2014
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 2 Ohio State rowing team has been selected to compete at the NCAA Championships for the 15th-consecutive season and 16th season overall, the NCAA committee announced Tuesday. The Buckeyes, defending national champions, qualified after earning an automatic bid as the 2014 Big Ten Champions and will look to defend their title as one of 22 teams competing at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind., May 30 – June 1.
With its 15th-consecutive appearance at the NCAA championships, Ohio State is one of only five programs in the nation to achieve such a feat, joining Brown, California, Princeton and Washington for the most consecutive trips to the national championships as a team.
Ohio State made program history in 2013, capturing its first NCAA Championship as a team in addition to claiming individual titles in the first varsity four and second varsity eight. The Buckeyes became the first Big Ten rowing program and the first women’s program at Ohio State to win an NCAA Championship.
During their record-setting season, the Buckeyes won a second consecutive national title in the first varsity four, which had previously brought home the program’s first national title in 2012. In addition, the second varsity eight closed out the season with a perfect 12-0 record and its first national title.
The Buckeyes enter the championships this year as the No. 1 seed in the first varsity eight and the No. 3 seed in both the second varsity eight and first varsity four.
