No. 4 Buckeyes Set to Compete in Big Ten Championships Sunday

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 4 Ohio State rowing team will travel to Indianapolis for the Big Ten championships Sunday at Eagle Creek Park. As the reigning Big Ten champions, the Buckeyes will aim to capture the program’s fourth title. The Scarlet and Gray will face Indiana, Iowa, No. 5 Michigan, No. 14 Michigan State, No. 18 Minnesota and No. 9 Wisconsin. The event is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. and is a seven-lane finals-only regatta.

EAGLE CREEK PARK
This year marks the second-consecutive year the Big Ten championships will be held at a neutral site. Admission to Eagle Creek Park is free. However there is a $6 fee per car to enter the park.

Eagle Creek Park is the fourth-largest city park in the nation. The park consists of 3,900 acres of wooded terrain and meadows, as well as 1,300 acres of water. For directions to the park, click here

SCORING
The Big Ten champion will be determined by the following points system. If there is a tie in points for the conference team championship, the conference champion will be determined based on which team’s First Varsity Eight finished higher.

All six of Ohio State’s boats received either a No. 1 or No. 2 seed at the Big Ten championships, with the Second Varsity Eight, the First Varsity Four and Second Novice Eight earning a No. 1 seed.

TV TIME
The 2012 Big Ten Rowing Championships will be broadcast by BTN and will air on tape delay Saturday, May 26 at 11 a.m. ET.

GOOD TIMES
Each of Ohio State’s three championship boats (First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four) is winning its races by an average time of more than eight seconds. The 1V8 is winning by an average time of 8.06 seconds, while the 2V8 is beating its opponents by an average margin of 12.46 seconds. Finally, the 1V4 is crossing the finish line by an average of 14.22 seconds over the second-place finisher.

Moving on Up
Ohio State remains fourth in the latest CRCA/US Rowing Coaches Poll released May 2. Ohio State is one of five Big Ten teams in the Top 20. Michigan (5), Wisconsin (9), Michigan State (14) and Minnesota (18) also rank in the Top 20. Click here for a full list of the rankings.

Boat of the Week
The Scarlet and Gray earned two Big Ten Conference Boat of the Week honors during the 2012 season.The First Varsity Eight was named the Big Ten Conference Co-Boat of the Week for the week of April 10. Ohio State shared the honor with Michigan’s First Varsity Eight. During the week of May 1, the Second Varsity Eight shared the honor with Michigan’s Second Varsity Eight.

LOOK BACK
The Buckeyes had a strong season as they won 53 out of 63 races. The Second Varsity Eight holds an undefeated regular-season record of 9-0.

NCAA SELECTION SHOW
The Buckeyes will look to compete in their 13th-consecutive NCAA championships. The 2012 NCAA Selection show for the 16-team field will be held at 5 p.m. Tuesday May 15.
