COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State First Varsity Eight was named Big Ten Boat of the Week by the conference office Tuesday after finishing unbeaten at the Clemson Invitational this past weekend.
Rachel Engel, Alice Riley, Anna Ralph, Cassandra Johnson, Annie Jachthuber, Stephanie Williams, Catherine Shields, Allyson Baker and coxswain Sarah Asad finished 3-0 in races and 17-0 overall over three sessions of competition Saturday and Sunday on Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. In the process, the Buckeyes defeated No. 4 Virginia, No. 8 Texas, No. 14 Washington State, No. 19 Syracuse and No. 20 Louisville.
Ohio State opened the morning session on Saturday with a time of 6:37.5 to defeat runner-up UCLA by 11 seconds. In the second race of the day, a season-best time of 6:15.4 helped OSU defeat the Cavaliers by four seconds and the Longhorns by eight seconds.
On Sunday, the Buckeyes closed the trip with an eight-second victory over Washington State, sounding the horn in a time of 6:34.7.
Ohio State hosts No. 20 Syracuse and Michigan State in the regular-season finale at Griggs Reservoir April 23.
