COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State First Varsity Eight was named Big Ten Boat of the Week by the conference office Tuesday after posting wins against No. 4 Virginia and Clemson last Saturday at Griggs Reservoir.
In the first race of the day, Rachel Engel, Alice Riley, Anna Ralph, Cassandra Johnson, Annie Jachthuber, Stephanie Williams, Catherine Shields, Sarah Davis and coxswain Sarah Asad earned a commanding open water victory over Clemson, crossing the finish line 23 seconds ahead of the Tigers in a season-best time of 6:23.9.
The wind picked up in the second session as the Buckeyes and Virginia went head-to-head, with the Buckeyes claiming victory in a time of 6:30.2, a comfortable distance ahead of the fourth-ranked Cavaliers (6:35.0).
The 1V8 is the second Ohio State boat this season to earn B1G Boat of the Week honors – the 2V4 received the award last week after an unbeaten season opener.
Ohio State heads to Princeton, N.J., for races with No. 7 Michigan and Michigan State next Saturday, April 9.
