COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 4 Ohio State hosts No. 8 Michigan, No. 13 Notre Dame and Tennessee on the Scioto River at Griggs Reservoir at 9 a.m. April 6. The competition marks the first of two home regattas for the Buckeyes this season.

LAST TIME OUT
Ohio State opened the 2013 season with a win in second varsity eight competition against No. 3 Princeton and No. 13 Brown March 30 at Carnegie Lake in Princeton, N.J. In addition to the win, the first varsity eight, first varsity four and second varsity four all posted second-place finishes for the Buckeyes.
The second varsity eight comprised of Daphne Socha, Chloe Meyer, Silvia De Matteis, Stephanie Johnson, Nicole Becks, Lauren Eckles, Meghan Birkbeck, Catherine Shields and coxswain Victoria Lazur sounded the horn in 6:51.4, defeating the Tigers by 5.1 seconds and the Bears by 18.2 seconds.
Ohio State’s second varsity eight continues its regular season undefeated streak from the 2012 campaign (9-0), and now stands at 10-0 in regular season competition dating back to March 24, 2012.
IN THE RANKINGS
Ohio State ranks No. 4 in the latest CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll. With their Top 5 ranking, the Buckeyes are currently the highest ranked Big Ten team followed by No. 8 Michigan, No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 20 Minnesota. Michigan State and Iowa are also in the mix, both having received votes towards the rankings.
The Wolverines come into Columbus ranked No. 8 in the latest poll. Last Saturday, Michigan opened its season with wins over No. 16 Michigan State and Iowa on the Grande River in East Lansing, Mich. The Wolverines won all 13 races that they competed in against the Spartans and Hawkeyes, while also sweeping all six head-to-head races against Michigan State in the morning session for the first time in program history. The Michigan first varsity eight earned Boat of the Week honors for its performances.
SCOUTING NOTRE DAME
The OSU Invitational marks the third regatta of the season for No. 13 Notre Dame, as the team competed at the Oak Ridge/Cardinal Invite in Oak Ridge, Tenn., March 16-17 and at Michigan State March 30. The Fighting Irish claimed four race victories during the first day of competition at the Oak Ridge/Cardinal Invite and wrapped up the second day of competition with five more. The Notre Dame first varsity eight earned BIG EAST Boat of the Week honors for its performances at the Invite. At Michigan State last weekend, Notre Dame captured eight victories as the Irish first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four and novice eight were each double winners on the day.
Tennessee opened the 2013 season with a regatta against the University of Minnesota on the Tennessee River March 24, falling to Golden Gophers in the first varsity eight, second varsity eight, first varsity four and second varsity four events. Last weekend, the Volunteers placed first in the second varsity four and the novice four against No. 18 Louisville in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Ohio State won its first national title in 2012 when the 1V4 of coxswain Alexandra Sawatzki, Taylore Urban, Katie King, Stephanie Johnson and Emily Ralph crossed the line in 7:13.09 to defeat Virginia by 2.09 seconds. Previously, the Buckeye 1V4 had placed as high as third at the NCAA Championships in 2006 in West Windsor, N.J.
Ohio State travels to Ann Arbor, Mich., to compete against Michigan and Michigan State at the Big Ten Duals April 13.
