COLUMBUS, Ohio - The fourth-ranked Ohio State rowing team raced against No. 2 Virginia and Duke in the ACC/Big Ten Duals Saturday at Lake Monticello in Charlottesville, Va. The Buckeyes took first in four races, including two wins in the first varsity eight events.
The first varsity eight of Claudia Wurzel (Fr., Como, Italy), Justine Mahler (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio), Zuzanna Trzcinska (So., Ilawa, Poland), Patricia Goodeman (Sr., Waterville, Ohio), Gabriele Albertaviciute (Vilnius, Lithuania), Jessica Shepherd (Sr., Richmond, Ohio), Annabelle Fago (Sr., Giessen, Germany), Briony Clare (Sr., Sydney, Australia) and coxswain Susanne Wilson (Sr., Fredericktown, Ohio) defeated Duke in the morning by a time of 16.9 seconds, crossing the finish line at 6:42.5.
The Buckeyes dropped their time in the race in the afternoon, upsetting second-ranked Virginia by almost five seconds with a time of 6:40.9. The Cavaliers clocked in at 6:45.8. It was the second-consecutive weekend Ohio State's first varsity eight upset a higher-ranked boat after defeating then-No. 1 Princeton March 24.
The second varsity eight boat of Andrea Dymalski (Jr., Bremen, Germany), Simone Haubner (Jr., Leipzig, Germany), Jackie Ruetenik (Jr., Vermillion, Ohio), Peta-Leigh Dakyns (So., Johannesburg, South Afica), Giulia Benedetti (Sr., Columbus, Ohio), Nora Franzen (Fr., Bad Honnef, Germany), Mary Sheehan (Sr., Johnstown, Pa.), Mackenzie Hiltbrand (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio) and coxswain Kate Hanseman (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio) topped Duke in the morning with a time of 6:46.4 to the Blue Devils' 7:03.0. The crew fell to Virginia in the afternoon, clocking in at 6:58.5 while the Cavaliers finished at 6:52.9.
The Buckeyes fell in both first varsity four races. The crew of Elizabeth LaMantia (Jr., Lima, Ohio), Lauren Lederer (Jr., Bay Village, Ohio), Emily Dougher (So., Cleveland, Ohio), Alli Cutlip (So., Waverly, Ohio) and coxswain Maria Hunter (So., Columbus, Ohio) crossed the finish line at 7:56.3 to defeat Duke at 8:02.0. Virginia took first at 7:49.8.
A second first varsity four boat of Ashley Korfel (Jr., Westerville, Ohio), Dougher, Katie Seighman (Sr., Mason, Ohio), Cutlip and coxswain Chelsea Smith (So., Dublin, Ohio) raced against two Virginia crews in the afternoon. The Cavaliers' A boat took first at 7:50.7 while the B boat was second at 8:03.1. The Buckeyes finished third at 8:07.3.
In the novice races, Ohio State's first novice eight defeated Duke and fell to Virginia. The Buckeye second novice eight dropped both races to Virginia.
Ohio State will next host its lone home regatta of the season April 7, welcoming No. 9 Tennessee and No. 19 Michigan to Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River. Races begin at noon.
