A bright new face for the Buckeyes, Julia Vari hopes to have a successful first year at Ohio State. A native of Ewing, New Jersey, Vari was the recipient of The Hun School's MVP/Coaches Award for Rowing three years in a row. A member of The Hun School, Saratoga Rowing Association and Penn AC U23 team, Vari plans to bring her experience and ability to learn to Coach Teitelbaum's program. Vari sat down with us to answer a few questions on how her first year is shaping up.
Why did you decide to attend The Ohio State University?
"It is the best place I have ever been. I really loved the visits I made during high school and was really excited to finally commit to coming here."
What advice do you have for potential or new recruits?
"Get to know the upperclassmen. They are always helpful and know the best places to eat."
What are your individual goals? Team goals?
"One day I will be able to do a pull-up! Also, balance on a bosu ball without someone having to help me. The biggest goals of the season however are to of course win the Big Ten and National Championships."
What is your favorite part about being a member of the women's rowing team?
"My teammates are awesome. Everyone is competitive, so each practice someone challenges you to get faster, yet at the end of the day everyone cares a lot about one another. An added bonus is that everyone is hysterical. I am always laughing when we hang out."
What is your favorite type of workout?
"Any workout that involves speed and does not take too long. I like getting to go really fast. I also really enjoy heavy lifting with low reps in the weight room. It makes me feel really strong."
Coach Teitelbaum has a stroke of kindness and gives the team the entire day off, what do you do with it?
"Simple. I watch hulu and sleep all day."
What is your favorite part of the new Griggs Reservoir Boathouse.
"My favorite room is the team room. It's definitely where the business starts."
What is your favorite post-workout snack?
"On an average day some fruit, chocolate milk and a cheese stick are perfect, but if it is someone's birthday Julie Dick makes homemade treats. She should be on the Food Network because she is a sweets genius.
If you played another sport at Ohio State, what would if be and why?
"Soccer because I played for 12 years prior to rowing. Although, if I had unlimited talent and coordination, I would try sprints/hurdles because they look so intense."
Which teammate gives you the most inspiration and guidance?
"Claire Bode was the first person on the team I ever met when I first visited the university while I was in high school. She is so calming and reassuring and can help me put things into perspective if I was ever having a day off. Sarah Marshall is also the other half of "Team Hench" in the weight room and she pushes me to get stronger, even when the weight seems impossible to lift. "
What race are you looking forward to the most this spring?
"The Princeton/Brown race because it will be the first one of the season and I am looking forward to kicking some serious butt in my hometown."
