COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 4 Ohio State rowing team's Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four will contend for gold medals at the 2012 NCAA Division I Championships after posting impressive times in their respective semifinal races Saturday on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
The Buckeye 1V4's bid for the title will begin at 10:25 a.m. Sunday, while the Scarlet and Gray 2V8's run will commence at 11:15 a.m.
With its time of 7:05.52, the First Varsity Four recorded the top time among all boats in both semifinal heats. The crew of coxswain Alexandra Sawatzki, Taylore Urban, Katie King, Stephanie Johnson and Emily Ralph finished 4.14 seconds ahead of California's second-best time of 7:09.66. In their respective heat, the Buckeyes outdistanced Virginia by 5.18 seconds (7:10.70).
Finishing second in its heat, the Second Varsity Eight (Katie Beletskaya, Samantha Fowle, Ashley Bauer, Meghan Birkbeck, Claudia Schiwy, Eelkje Miedema, Cori Meinert, Nadine Seehaus and coxswain Victoria Lazur) crossed the finish line in 6:33.28, behind Michigan (6:29.71). The Buckeyes had the fourth-best time among all crews with just.39 seconds separating them from a Top 3 placing.
A fifth-place finish in its heat advanced the First Varsity Eight to the Petite Final, where it will compete for a Top 7 finish. Buckeyes Ellen Heister, Claudia Herpertz, Ulrike Denker, Emily Walsh, Kate Sweeney, Allison Elber, Ilse Paulis, Claire-Louise Bode and coxswain Amanda Poll sounded the horn in 6:22.30.
