COLUMBUS, Ohio - All three championship boats representing the No. 4 Ohio State rowing team advanced to the semifinals of the 2012 NCAA Division I Championships Friday on Lake Mercer in West Windsor, N.J.
The Top 3 crews from each of the three heats among the three championship boats automatically advanced to the semifinals, which will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday. The remaining teams will row in repechage races Friday afternoon with the winners securing a spot in the semifinals.
The First Varsity Eight of Ellen Heister, Claudia Herpertz, Ulrike Denker, Emily Walsh, Kate Sweeney, Allison Elber, Ilse Paulis, Claire-Louise Bode and coxswain Amanda Poll set the tone for a successful day for the Buckeyes. The crew crossed the finish line in 6:49.85, overcoming a California team that clocked in at 6:52.19 and a Princeton squad that sounded the horn in 6:53.48.
Next up for Ohio State was the Second Varsity Eight which consisted of Katie Beletskaya, Samantha Fowle, Ashley Bauer, Meghan Birkbeck, Claudia Schiwy, Eelkje Miedema, Cori Meinert, Nadine Seehaus and coxswain Victoria Lazur. Just 1.98 seconds separated the Buckeye 2V8 (6:43.97) from a Princeton crew that completed its race in 6:45.95. Washington rounded out the Top 3, finishing in a time of 6:47.56.
In Ohio State's final race of the day, the First Varsity Four (coxswain Alexandra Sawatzki, Taylore Urban, Katie King, Stephanie Johnson and Emily Ralph) executed an impressive performance, outdistancing second-place Yale by 5.79 seconds with its time of 7:19.94. The Bulldogs finished in a time of 7:25.73, while Wisconsin was third (7:28.88).
