Clemson, S.C. – No. 4 Ohio State wrapped up its regular season regatta schedule on Sunday morning at Lake Hartwell with a second place finish at the Clemson Invite with 125 points. All of Ohio State’s five boats competed in the ‘A’ finals.
The scoring format, one that mirrored the NCAA Championships, counted points from the First Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Four races. No. 5 Texas edged Ohio State with 130 points for the team title.
The First Varsity Eight – Ida Kruse, Stephanie Williams, Anne Dietrich, Aina Cid I Centelles, Annie Jachthuber, Sandra Dinter, Bridget Schodorf, Alice Riley and Cassidy Jenney (coxswain) – got the Sunday session started with silver. The boat clocked a time of 6:21.2 to finish behind Texas (6:15.1), but defeated other ranked boats: No. 10 Virginia, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 14 Washington State and No. 15 Syracuse. The second place finish earned Ohio State 63 points.
In the Second Varsity Eight (Allyson Baker, Morgan Hummel, Cassandra Johnson, Joan Darnell, Sarah Peffley Maddie Perrett, Chelsea Harpool, Stephanie Gase and Anjali Fernandes (coxswain) , the Buckeyes placed third in the seven-team heat with a time of 6:42.2. Texas won this heat too with a readout of 6:36.4 and Wisconsin (6:38.9) placed second. The bronze racked up 40 points for the Scarlet and Gray
In the 1V4, the Buckeyes – Helen Sudhoff (coxswain, Catherine McNutt, Hannah Hites, Abby Ernst and Kendell Massier - combined grit and talent to win the session. Ohio State (7:18.5) crossed the finish line half a second ahead of Wisconsin (7:19.0) who took second. The 1V4’s win earned the Buckeyes 22 points.
The other two races were the 2V4 and First Novice Eight. With a win in its race, the Second Varsity Four (7:31.1) of Ashley Saba, Kimberleigh Warriner, Hanna Gottschalk, Kaylee Koker and Emma Warns (coxswain) maintained its undefeated record in races to improve to 8-0 on the season. In its eight races, the 2V4 has combined to beat 24 opponents. The 2V4’s time of 7:31.1 was more than seven seconds faster than the second-place boat.
The 1N8 of Bailey Spees, Madelaine Frendberg, Katherine Kreczmer, Madison Sheahan, Grace Libben, Megan Anderson, Sierra Tiede, Olivia Carter and Cameron Garcia (coxswain) place fifth with a time of 7:18.2.
Ohio State will have three weeks to prepare for the Big Ten Championships (May 13-14) that will take place in Indianapolis.
