Top-ranked Buckeyes Earn Eight Wins at Big Ten Double Dual

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 1-ranked Ohio State women's rowing team won eight races against No. 18 Wisconsin and No. 19 Minnesota Saturday at the Big Ten Double Dual on Griggs Reservoir. Rutgers also competed at the four-team event.
The four teams enjoyed sunny skies, cool temperatures and calm water on the Scioto River throughout the regatta. Ohio State finished the day a perfect 5-0 against the Gophers in head-to-head competition and 2-3 against the Badgers in dual races, with both varsity eights earning wins. The Buckeyes were also victorious in one of two three-boat 2N8 contests against the Badgers and Gophers.
OSU's second novice eight -- Rachel Parker, Hannah Smith, Brittany Trischan, Elizabeth Spahr, Caroline Gaker, Karen Somes, Hannah Hites, Erica Smith and coxswain Mia Francisco -- opened the race day with a second-place finish (6:27.77) behind Wisconsin (6:24.22) and ahead of Minnesota (7:03.66).
The Scarlet and Gray would face the Gophers in head-to-head competition for the remainder of the morning session. First up was the first novice eight, which posted a winning time of 6:19.37. Kaylee Koker, Ashley Saba, Morgan Hummel, Kelsey Tester, Catherine McNutt, Bianca Piloseno, Hanna Gottschalk, Stephanie Gase and coxswain Rachel Kitay put together an impressive performance, defeating the Minnesota boat by nearly 20 seconds.
Ohio State's second varsity four was next on the water. Hailey Tiarks, Joan Darnell, Chelsea Harpool, Sarah N. Davis and coxswain Maggie Creely claimed a hard-fought five-second victory over the Golden Gophers, crossing the line in a time of 6:59.88. The first varsity four race was also a tight affair as the Buckeyes were victorious by six seconds over Minnesota. Emily Caudle, Bridget Schodorf, Sandra Dinter, Anne Dietrich and coxswain Sami Jurofsky completed the course in a time of 6:45.21.
Following two close contests, the 2V8 -- MaryClare Stannard, Bridget Verdeyen, Emily Markham, Annie Jachthuber, Anna Gackowski, Rachel Engel, Allyson Baker, Kelsey Albrinck and coxswain Sarah Asad -- won its race against Minnesota by nearly 12 seconds with a time of 6:04.88.
The Buckeyes' first varsity eight closed the morning session with a 16-second victory over the Gophers. Chloe Meyer, Sarah Peffley, Anna Ralph, Cassandra Johnson, Ashley Bauer, Sarah K. Davis, Catherine Shields, Holly Norton and coxswain Kylie Soltis cruised to a first-place time of 5:54.78.
In the afternoon session, the second novice eight rebounded to claim first-place over the Badgers and Gophers in a time of 6:22.57. Cynthia Jennings raced in place of Smith for the second race of the day.
OSU and Wisconsin battled head-to-head for the remainder of the afternoon. One of the closest races of the day came in the first novice eight, as the Badgers (6:17.63) edged the Buckeyes (6:18.16) at the wire to take the win.
Wisconsin's varsity fours continued momentum with back-to-back victories over the Buckeyes. The Badger 2V4 (6:58.05) defeated OSU (7:12.57) by over 14 seconds, while UW's 1V8 earned a closely contested victory (6:44.96-6:49.39).
Ohio State closed the afternoon with victories in both varsity eight matchups. The 2V8 edged UW at the finish line by less than a second (6:09.25-6:10.07) to move its record to 6-0 on the season and 39-3 dating back to the opening of the 2012 season. The 1V8 improved to 6-0 on the season and extended its unbeaten streak to 18 races since the beginning of last season with a well-earned victory over a strong Wisconsin boat (5:58.74-6:03.04).
