No. 2 Ohio State Posts Six Wins at Oregon State Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 2 Ohio State rowing team posted six wins Saturday at the Oregon State Classic at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore., earning victories over No. 9 Michigan, No. 11 Stanford, No. 20 Oregon State and Duke. The first varsity eight and second varsity four each claimed two wins to finish the day undefeated.

The second varsity four opened the morning session of racing, earning the first win of the day for the Buckeyes. The crew of Sytske Miedema, Anna Ralph, Jillian Getz, Anne Fruth and coxswain Sarah Asad posted a time of 7:20.20 to beat Michigan (7:32.70), Oregon State ‘B’ (7:50.48) and Oregon State ‘C’ (8:09.21) to the line.

The first varsity four of Sarah Kessler, Chloe Meyer, Sarah Peffley, Kelsey Albrinck and coxswain Sami Jurofsky raced next, placing second in their heat. The crew crossed the line in 7:19.08 to finish behind Michigan who finished the race in 7:17.60, but ahead of Stanford who finished the race in 7:24.17.

The second varsity eight continued its undefeated streak in the morning session, narrowly defeating Stanford to tally its second win of the season. The crew of Nicole Becks, Katie Beletskaya, Anna Gackowski, Victoria Langwasser, Lauren Eckles, Anne Dietrich, Daphne Socha, Taylore Urban and coxswain Alex Sawatzki earned a time of 6:32.10 to place ahead of Stanford (6:33.56) and Michigan (6:45.33).

The Buckeyes closed out the morning of racing in the first varsity eight, with the crew of Stephanie Williams, Claire-Louise Bode, Eelkje Miedema, Ashley Bauer, Katie King, Elodie Rivera, Holly Norton, Catherine Shields and coxswain Victoria Lazur notching a time of 6:24.70 to post a first-place finish. Behind Ohio State, Stanford posted a time of 6:26.17 to earn second while Michigan posted a time of 6:35.82 to round out the top three teams.

The second varsity four claimed its second win of the day and the first of three additional Buckeye wins in the first race of the afternoon session, clocking a 7:21.36 to finish ahead of Michigan (7:25.96) and Oregon State ‘B’ (7:50.48).

The first varsity four raced second, collecting its first win of the day in a time of 7:17.20. Michigan placed second in 7:21.22 while Stanford finished third in 7:23.74. Oregon State ‘A’ (7:30.45) and Duke (7:48.46) rounded out the remaining teams.

The second varsity eight had its two-year regular-season undefeated streak snapped in the afternoon session, barely falling to Stanford. The Buckeyes finished the race in 6:30.44 to fall to the Cardinal (6:29.41) by just over one second. Michigan finished third in 6:39.41, Oregon State finished fourth in 6:52.87 and Duke finished fifth in 6:55.02.

The first varsity eight closed the day of racing, claiming its second win after crossing the line in 6:24.50. Stanford took second place in 6:26.02 while Michigan took third place in 6:30.95. Oregon State finished the race in fourth with a time of 6:31.73 and Duke finished the race in fifth with a time of 6:38.96.

The Buckeyes next travel to Iowa City, Iowa, April 12 to compete against Iowa and No. 17 Louisville.
