COLUMBUS, Ohio - The third-ranked Ohio State women's rowing team earned wins in six races against No. 4 Virginia and Clemson Saturday morning at Griggs Reservoir.
Due to the threat of strong winds later in the day, teams were on the water and ready to race at dawn. The early start on the Scioto River did little to deter the Buckeyes, as the Scarlet and Gray won four of five races against Clemson and a combined Third Varsity Four contest in the first of two sessions.
Ohio State's First Varsity Eight was first on the water, earning a commanding open water victory over the Tigers. Rachel Engel, Alice Riley, Anna Ralph, Cassandra Johnson, Annie Jachthuber, Stephanie Williams, Catherine Shields, Sarah Davis and coxswain Sarah Asad crossed the finish line in 6:23.9.
The Second Varsity Eight - Anne Dietrich, Hanna Gottschalk, Joan Darnell, Sarah Peffley, Morgan Hummel, Allyson Baker, Bridget Verdeyen, Sandra Dinter and coxswain Kylie Soltis - continued the Buckeyes' early momentum, cruising to a winning time of 6:33.1 over the Tigers (6:51.3).
Next up, the First and Second Varsity Fours earned back-to-back wins for the Scarlet and Gray. The 1V4 -
Catherine McNutt, Bridget Schodorf, MaryClare Stannard, Ida Kruse and coxswain Maggie Creely - won by 23 seconds (7:16.2-7:39.1), while the 2V4 - Kaylee Koker, Ashley Saba, Hannah Hites, Emily Caudle and coxswain Jaz Fonseca-Folden - turned in a first-place time of 7:24.9.
