COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 13 Ohio State rowing team claimed all 14 races against No. 7 Yale, No. 9 Michigan and No. 11 Michigan State Saturday at Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River.
The First Varsity Eight of Ellen Heister, Claudia Herpertz, Ilse Paulis, Allison Elber, Kate Sweeney, Emily Walsh, Ulrike Denker, Claire-Louise Bode and coxswain Amanda Poll took an early lead over Yale. Ohio State pulled a full-boat length ahead by the 750 meter mark and continued to extend its lead to the finish where they came across at 6:23.66. Yale crossed at 6:32.38.
The Second Varsity Eight (Katie Beletskaya, Samantha Fowle, Ashley Bauer, Eelkje Miedema, Claudia Schiwy, Meghan Birkbeck, Corrine Meinert, Nadine Seehaus and coxswain Victoria Lazur) followed the lead of the first race and finished at 6:25.25 with an open-boat length of water over Yale at 6:34.66. The Buckeyes pulled to an early lead over Yale, reaching a seven-seat lead by the 500 meter mark and continued this advantage the entire race.
The Second Varsity Four of coxswain Jenni Gill, Katie King, Ashley Dzurnak, Katherine Cook and Katherine Tylinski started the race even with Yale for the first 200 meters. Ohio State pushed out to a full-boat length at the 750 meter mark and stretched this lead to the finish, crossing at 7:14.81, 13.85 seconds ahead of Yale.
In the First Varsity Four race Ohio State and Yale started off neck and neck. In the first half of the race Yale took a small lead only to be overtaken by Ohio State who eventually pushed to open water with 250 meters left in the race. The Scarlet and Gray crossed the finish line at 7:11.43 and Yale completed the race at 7:17.12. The First Varsity Four of Stephanie Johnson, Emily Ralph, Brittany Wex and Kara Shropshire were led by coxswain Dara Schnoll.
The First Novice Eight of Sarah Milota, Meghan Rewick, Heather Truthan, Carolyn Schneller, Sarah Kessler, Kelsey Albrinck, Nicole Becks, Ellen Zwick and coxswain Claire Sasowky raced strongly, owing a substantial lead over Yale the entire race. Ohio State finished at 6:54.32 with Yale crossing at 7:03.48
In the Third Varsity Four race Ohio State dominated Michigan, finishing in a time of 7:16.67 with Michigan 21.03 seconds behind. The Third Varsity Four boat consisted of coxswain Alexandra Sawatzki, Lauren Eckles, Julie Dick, Taylore Urban, Sarah Cornish.
The Second Novice Eight had an exciting race to finish out the first session. Ohio State began the race off to a slow start in third place behind Michigan and Michigan State. By the 1,000 meter mark Ohio State had pulled to first place with Michigan State in second and Michigan falling to third. Ohio State crossed first at 7:04.87 with Michigan State in second place at 7:14.25 and Michigan finishing at 7:17.03. The Second Novice Eight of Anne Fruth, Andie Bonamer, Sarah Marshall, Julie Walsh, Rachel Layfield, Sara Handa, Chloe Meyer and Katherine Skouby were led by coxswain Melissa Trejo.
In the second session Ohio State faced No. 11 Michigan State. The racing began with the Third Varsity Four event and Ohio State faced Michigan in addition to Michigan State. Ohio State (7:25.20) finished with three boat lengths of open water between them and Michigan State (7:41.70) with Michigan (8:25.89) coming in three boat lengths of water after Michigan State.
In the Second Novice Eight race Ohio State pulled away from Michigan State with a boat-length of open water lead at the 1,000 meter mark. Ohio State came across the finish line at 7:08.25 with four open boat lengths of water over Michigan State who finished at 7:32.07.
Michigan State pulled seven seats ahead of Ohio State in the first 250 meters in the First Varsity Four race. By the 650 meter mark Ohio State had pulled even with the Spartans and pulled two seats ahead by the 750 meter mark. With an impressive finish Ohio State pulled across the finish line with a boat length of water between them and Michigan State. Ohio State crossed at 7:16.50 while Michigan State finished at 7:24.94
Ohio State had an eight-seat lead at the 500 meter mark over Michigan State in the First Novice Eight race. The Buckeyes continued the lead throughout the race crossing the finish line at 6:51.31, 10.16 seconds ahead of Michigan State.
In the second quarter of the Second Varsity Eight race Ohio State had pulled ahead of Michigan State with open water between the boats. Besting their time from the morning, Ohio State crossed at 6:29.10 with four boat lengths of open water between them and Michigan State who finished at 6:47.45.
The Second Varsity Four had a substantial lead the entire race over Michigan State and finished at 7:13.39, over Michigan State’s time of 7:41.80.
In the final race of the day the First Varsity Eight finished at a time of 6:24.70 with Michigan State coming in at 6:32.92. Ohio State had a seven-seat lead over Michigan State at the 500 meter mark. They continued to push this lead further throughout the race finishing with a boat length of open water ahead of Michigan State.
