No. 1 Buckeyes Earn 10 Wins in Season Opener

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 1-ranked Ohio State women's rowing team opened the 2015 season with 10 victories against crews from No. 9 Notre Dame and No. 18 Louisville at the Big Ten/ACC Double Dual on Griggs Reservoir Saturday. Michigan State also represented the Big Ten at the four-team event.

The Buckeyes won five of six races in both the morning and afternoon sessions. Ohio State's top-four boats ended the day with perfect 8-0 records, while the first novice eight and second novice eight split their respective races.

Ohio State battled Notre Dame in the morning session. The second novice eight opened the racing day for the Scarlet and Gray with a second-place time of 7:00.16. The crew - Erica Smith, Hannah Hites, Karen Somes, Rachel Parker, Elizabeth Sparh, Caroline Gaker, Cynthia Jennings, Hannah Smith and coxswain Mia Francisco - finished seven seconds behind ND.

OSU's first novice eight - Stephanie Gase, Hanna Gottschalk, Morgan Hummel, Kelsey Tester, Bianca Piloseno, Catherine McNutt, Kaylee Koker, Ashley Saba and coxswain Rachel Kitay - responded with a commanding win, crossing the finish line 21 seconds ahead of the Fighting Irish in a time of 6:44.04.

Two Buckeye crews were featured in the combined second varsity four/third varsity four race. Ohio State's 2V4 - Casey Schaffer, Emily Markham, Bridget Schodorf, Sandra Dinter and coxswain Maggie Creely - used a time of 7:12.90 to edge Notre Dame by three seconds. The 3V4 - Chelsea Harpool, Rory O'Shaughnessy, Emily Caudle, Sarah N. Davis and coxswain Dani Figliuolo - completed its race in 7:26.69.

In first varsity four competition, Sarah Peffley, Kelly Ann Baird, Anna Gackowski, Sandra Dinter and coxswain Sarah Asad notched an impressive victory over the Irish (7:34.29) in a time of 7:13.35.

The varsity eights closed the morning session for the Buckeyes. The 2V8 - Laura Monteso Esmel, Bridget Verdeyan, MaryClare Stannard, Annie Jachthuber, Cassandra Johnson, Rachel Engel, Allyson Baker, Kelsey Albrink and coxswain Sami Jurofsky - cruised to first-place time of 6:23.95, 14 seconds clear of Notre Dame. The 1V8 - Chloe Meyer, Aina Cid Centelles, Anna Ralph, Stephanie Williams, Ashley Bauer, Sarah K. Davis, Catherine Shields, Holly Norton and cox Kylie Soltis - defeated the Fighting Irish by 18 seconds with a winning time of 6:10.65.

After an hour break, Ohio State returned to the water for the afternoon session against the Cardinals. The second novice eight improved its time from the morning race by more than three seconds, posting a winning time of 6:56.95, six second ahead of UL.

Louisville (6:37.93) would edge the Buckeyes (6:38.45) in the first novice eight in one of the closest races of the day. The 1N8 still managed to improve its time from the morning by nearly six seconds.

Ohio State finished 1-2 ahead of the Cardinals in the second varsity four/third varsity four race. The 2V4 crossed the line in a time of 7:15.75, while the 3V4 (7:20.02) improved its time from the opening session by over six seconds. Louisville finished in 7:22.83.

In the next race, the 1V4 (7:11.51) shaved almost two seconds off its time from the morning session to defeat Louisville by more than 12 seconds.    

A time of 6:24.97 helped the second varsity eight to a win over UL. The Buckeyes crossed almost 13 seconds ahead of the Cardinals and improved the 2V8 record to 35-3 dating back to 2012.

The Buckeye 1V8 made it 14 wins in a row since the start of the 2014 season with a first-place time of 6:13.35, more than 15 seconds faster than Louisville (6:28.70).
