COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's lacrosse team remained undefeated in road contests with a 10-7 upset victory over No. 4 seed Duke in the first round of the NCAA Championship Thursday at Koskinen Stadium. OSU's Caroline Weatherill (Jr., Malvern, Pa.) scored four first half goals with Regina Oliver (So., Pottstown, Pa.) adding three and Shannon Wilson (Sr., Sherkston, Ontario) two for the Buckeyes. Blue Devil Lauren Gallagher (Sr., West Chester, Pa.) had a team-high three goals for Duke (13-5) with Kate Kaiser (Sr., Cockeysville, Md.) adding two.
Ohio State (14-3) advances to face Princeton (13-4) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship Sunday, May 11. The site and time of the game is yet to be determined. The Tigers won their opening round game, 19-1, over Le Moyne (12-6) Thursday.
The Blue Devils opened the scoring with a goal by Katie Chrest (Fr., Hampstead, Md.) at 3:15. Ohio State tied the game at one with a Weatherill score at 4:32. Duke countered with a goal from Kaiser at 5:12. The Blue Devils made the lead 3-1 with a free position score by Gallagher at 7:37. The Buckeyes exploded scoring the next five goals to hold a 6-3-halftime lead. OSU's Oliver started the scoring run with a free position goal at 12:05. Weatherill's second goal of the game came at 15:03, with an assist from Tracey Bounds (Sr., Ellicott City, Md.), tying the game at three. Weatherill's third goal at 18:14 put the Buckeyes in the lead at 4-3 as Duke called timeout. Weatherill made it three-in-a-row and her fourth of the game at 4:23. OSU closed out the scoring in the half at 29:48 with an Oliver goal, assisted by Bounds to end the half with a 6-3 lead. Ohio State made it six straight goals with Oliver's third score of the contest at 31:39 to lead 7-3. Duke's Kaiser cut into the lead (7-4) with a goal at 44:16. The Buckeyes added to the lead with back-to-back goals by Shannon Wilson at 45:54 and 48:56 to open a 9-4 lead. With seven minutes remaining, Duke put together a three-goal run. Jessica Bennett (Sr., Gladstone, N.J.) scored at 52:59 with an assist to Kristy Dirks (So., Annapolis, Md.). Gallagher, with her second goal at 53:58 cut the Buckeye lead to 9-6. Just 20 seconds later (54:18), Gallagher found the net for her third goal, to make the score, 9-7, Ohio State. Duke controlled the draw but Kelly Cook (Jr., Downingtown, Pa.) caused a turnover leading to OSU's final goal by Andrea Fischer (Fr., Cleveland Heights, Ohio), on an assist from Wilson, at 57:02. The Blue Devils controlled the next draw but failed to get a shot off in the final minutes as Ohio State won 10-7.
OSU's Erin Forquer (So., Shaker Heights, Ohio) had seven saves in picking up her 14th win of the season. Blue Devil Megan Huether (Fr., Lutherville, Md.) recorded nine saves in the loss.
