Buckeyes Claim Third NCAA Bid in Program History
May 4, 2014
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The NCAA Women's Lacrosse Committee has awarded Ohio State an at-large bid to the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship, announced Sunday evening on NCAA.com. The Buckeyes (13-6 overall) will face Louisville (15-3) Friday, May 9 at a time to be determined in Evanston, Ill. The team watched the NCAA selection show in the football team meeting room at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.
Under fourth-year head coach Alexis Venechanos, Ohio State is having one of its best years in the history of the program, claiming 13 wins (second all-time) and a program-record nine home victories in Columbus. The team heads to the NCAA Championship for the third time in program history and first trip since the 2003 campaign.
"I couldn't be more proud and excited for our student-athletes and our program," Venechanos said. "This was definitely one of our goals coming into the season. We had a lot of phenomenal games this year and I'm really proud the committee selected us. We are really excited for the opportunity to be playing in May."
The Buckeyes finished second in the American Lacrosse Conference with a 4-2 mark and also defeated three Top 10 opponents. In the ALC Tournament, Ohio State advanced to its fourth-consecutive semifinals before falling just short, 8-7, against Northwestern in Evanston. Ohio State's first appearance was during the 2002 campaign. The winner of the Ohio State-Louisville matchup will play host and No. 5 seed Northwestern May 11 at Lakeside Field.
Louisville is 15-3 overall and won the Big East Tournament Title last weekend in Washington, D.C. The team defeated Georgetown, 9-8, in the tournament final for the automatic selection. Earlier this year, the Buckeyes defeated Louisville, 12-11, March 4 as Jennifer Porretto collected four points, while Cian Dabrowski tallied three goals. Ohio State also defeated Northwestern five days later, 11-10, in overtime March 9 in Columbus.
"Louisville is a great team - the Big East champions - who have won several games heading into the tournament," Venechanos said. "We are going to start watching video and get to it. We've played a lot of Top 10 opponents that has helped us prepare for this great opportunity. Again, I couldn't be more proud of our seniors and our team for achieving this goal."
