COLUMBUS, Ohio -- For the third consecutive week, at least one Ohio State women's lacrosse student-athlete has been honored by the Big Ten conference. But this time around two are receiving recognition as freshman Jillian Rizzo was named the Big Ten's defensive player of the week and classmate Liza Hernandez freshman of the week. It is the third straight freshman of the week honor for Hernandez, who also was a top candidate for offensive player honors.
Rizzo, from Queensbury, N.Y., has been outstanding between the pipes for the Buckeyes this season. On Sunday vs. Cincinnati she continued her stellar play, making 11 saves as Ohio State defeated Cincinnati, 17-8, to remain undefeated. Rizzo made seven of her saves in the second half in 25 minutes of play as Cincinnati tried to mount a rally. Almost every time the Bearcats had an open scoring opportunity, Rizzo denied them with one great save after another.
Rizzo, who had 12 saves last week at Jacksonville, is currently second in Big Ten and 10th in the NCAA with 30 saves this season.
Hernandez, from New Albany, scored a team-high six points on four goals and two assists vs. the Bearcats. She scored the third and fourth goals of the game to help Ohio State open a 5-0 lead. Her two assists came with 25 seconds left in the first half and just under 3 minutes into the second half to help Ohio State take a 13-4 lead. She scored two more goals in the second half at 21:42 and 5:42 to help OSU secure the win. She also scooped up five of Ohio State's 15 draw controls.
Hernandez leads Ohio State with 10 goals and 16 points on the season. She ranks second in the Big Ten and 15th in the NCAA with her 16 points.
The Buckeyes return to action this weekend at home, beginning at 6 p.m. Friday vs. Stanford before welcoming California at Noon Sunday. Both games will take place at Ohio Stadium.
