COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's lacrosse team dominated American Sunday, defeating the Eagles 16-4 to give head coach Alexis Venechanos and her staff their first win as Buckeye coaches. Three OSU players - Alayna Markwordt, Brittney Zerhusen and Jayme Beard - scored three goals apiece as the Buckeyes improved to 1-2 on the season and American begins its year 0-1.

"I am very proud of the way we played together for the win against a very tough American team," Venechanos said. "We showed strong character in being able to bounce back mentally and physically after a tough one-goal loss at Navy Friday night."

The Eagles struck first, scoring at 26:16, but the Buckeyes rattled off six unanswered from five different scorers to close out the half with a 6-1 lead. Zerhusen started off the scoring spree, converting on a pass from Jacqueline Orona at the 22:17 mark, and Ohio State continued to find the back of the net until 2:27 remaining in the period. Cara Facchina tallied two during the run, increasing the freshman midfielder's goal total to a team rookie-best four.

American opened the second half with back-to-back scores to cut the lead to 6-3, but a 10-0 Buckeye run quickly put the game out of reach. Markwordt, Zerhusen and Beard, currently ranked No. 1-3, respectively, on the team in scoring, paced the offensive output with two each in the half. Kelly Becker, a freshman from Dublin, Ohio, also added a pair for her first two collegiate goals. The Dublin Jerome product put the Buckeyes up by 10, at 13-3, and later stretched the lead to 12, 15-3.

Ohio State finished the day with a 24-14 advantage in shots and a 14-8 margin in draw controls, marking the third game in a row it has out-drawn the opponent. Annie Carruthers played 53 minutes in goal, making six saves with three goals-against, before giving way to Megan Fiorito who made one stop in the final seven minutes.

The Buckeyes open up the home portion of their schedule at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27 against St. Bonaventure on the indoor turf field in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. Admission to the game, and to all home regular-season women's lacrosse contests, is free. The Bonnies are currently 1-0 after winning their season opener vs. Bucknell, 14-10, last weekend.
