COLUMBUS, Ohio - Gabby Capuzzi and Tori DeScenza each collected honors from the American Lacrosse Conference after the first week of the 2012 Ohio State women's lacrosse season. Capuzzi garnered Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while DeScenza was honored as the Rookie of the Week after the pair helped the 18th-ranked Buckeyes to a pair of victories over San Diego State, 19-4, and No. 6 Stanford, 14-10.
Capuzzi, a senior from Broomall, Pa., scored eight goals and added three assists through the opening weekend of play, including six points in the upset of No. 6 Stanford. The senior captain had five goals and an assist vs. the Cardinal, while also tallying team-leading totals of five draw controls and a trio of groundballs and caused turnovers.
DeScenza, a freshman from Sea Bright, N.J., finished her first complete collegiate game against No. 6 Stanford with 12 saves, including 11 in the second half as the Cardinal exploded with 22 shots. The Buckeyes upset the Cardinal 14-10 to up their record to 2-0 after an opening day win against San Diego State. Against San Diego State, the rookie goalie played the second half, allowing two goals and coming up with a pair of groundballs.
In addition, DeScenza was named the WomensLax.com Rookie of the Week for her performance.
All of the Buckeyes return to action at 2 p.m. Friday when they host Robert Morris in the home opener in Ohio Stadium. They then welcome Louisville to the storied football venue for a 1 p.m. contest Sunday.
