COLUMBUS, Ohio - Freshman Liza Hernandez has been named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week in recognition of her performance Sunday at Jacksonville.
Hernandez, from nearby New Albany, continued her hot start to her collegiate career with three more goals - all unassisted and all in the second half - and one assist. She also added one draw control.
Hernandez assisted on Ohio State's first goal of the game to Mackenzie Maring at 22:58. Her first goal came at 21:47 in the second half to tie the game at 7-7 before her second goal at 17:49 sparked a 4-0 run by the Buckeyes and take an 11-9 lead. Her third goal tied the game at 12-12 with under 5 minutes to play.
Hernandez leads the Buckeyes with six goals and two assists through two games this season.
Another Buckeye freshman worth mentioning, one who also caught the attention of Inside Lacrosse this week, was the outstanding play of Jillian Rizzo in goal. The freshman from Queensbury, N.Y., recorded 16 saves as Jacksonville showered the young Buckeye goalie with 33 shots on the day. Rizzo also added six ground balls and was a top candidate for Big Ten defensive player of the week honors for her efforts. Rizzo (2-0) has 23 saves through two games.
The Buckeyes return to action at 2 p.m. Sunday vs. Cincinnati at Ohio Stadium.
