In a Nutshell
Ohio State welcomes back five starters and 16 letterwinners from the 2011 team which finished 10-7 overall and 2-3 in the ALC. Among the returning players are senior captains Alayna Markwordt, an Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-American, Gabby Capuzzi and Kirsten Donahue. Fellow senior Olivia Cora and sophomore Tayler Kuzma are the two returning mainstays of the Buckeye defense. They are under the guidance of second-year head coach Alexis Venechanos.
“The team has a renewed energy and dedication which has really shown through the preseason, Alexis Venechanos, Ohio State head coach said. “Everyone came back in really great shape, giving us tremendous potential and bringing a level of excitement. There is a great core of returning players, but a lot of brand new faces, which only adds another element of excitement.”
The Buckeyes are 10-6 all-time in season openers and 3-4 when playing away from Columbus. Ohio State fell to then-No. 4 Duke in Durham, N.C., to being the 2011 campaign.
Ohio State was picked No. 18 in the IWLCA coaches poll and 20th in the deBeer media poll prior to the start of the season, while coming in fourth in the ALC preseason rankings. Individually, Alayna Markwordt has been tabbed a preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse and an ALC player to watch, along with fellow senior captain Gabby Capuzzi.
The 2012 roster features eight seniors, three juniors, eight sophomores and 11 freshmen hailing from 10 different states. Maryland leads the way with 10, followed by New Jersey (5), New York (4), Pennsylvania (4), Ohio (2) and one each from Colorado, Connecticut, Minnesota, Missouri and Virginia. There are 13 new faces among the group, including two transfers to go with the 11 rookies. In addition, there are two sets of sisters who have teamed up for the 2012 season.
Scouting the Opponents
San Diego State, coached by former Buckeye Kylie (Reade) White, is in its inaugural season of lacrosse in 2012 and will take the field for its first game vs. Ohio State with four players from the Buckeye state.
Ohio State trails 3-5 in all-time series against Stanford, including a 17-5 loss in Columbus last season. The Buckeyes last defeated the Cardinal in the 2004 season opener, a 10-9 overtime decision in Palo Alto. Ranked sixth in the IWLCA preseason poll, Stanford enters the season without its top four goal scorers from a 2011 team which went to the NCAA Tournament for the second-consecutive season and won the MPSF for the seventh year in a row.
After the pair of games in the Golden State, the Buckeyes return home to host Robert Morris at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17 in the Woody Hayes Athletic Center before making history with the first women’s lacrosse game in Ohio Stadium at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19 vs. Louisville. Admission to both games, and to all home women’s lacrosse games this season, is free.
