Bringing Back The Thunder
The Buckeyes return 87 percent of their scoring from the 2017 season in the form of the seven top point scorers, and the six top goal scorers. “We’re excited to watch the offense continue to develop their chemistry,” Ohio State Head Coach Alexis Venechanos said. “We believe that we have scoring threats all over the field and we’re confident in our ability to get the ball to those threats and capitalize on them.”
Buckeyes By The Numbers
Molly Wood leads the way for Ohio State on the offensive end. The senior paced the Buckeyes with 48 points last year from 42 goals and six assists. She also led the team with 71 draw controls and comes into the season just 34 draw controls away from the program record. Wood also had 20 ground balls, and nine caused turnovers. Baley Parrott finished 2017 in second on the team with 38 points. Parrott scored 30 goals, and came away with 25 draw controls, 18 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers. Liza Hernandez scored 34 points, good for third on the team, in just nine games before her freshman year ended due to injury. Hernandez had 21 goals, 13 draw controls and 12 ground balls in her nine games.
A pair of seniors anchor the Ohio State defense in Shannon Rosati and Madison Castelein. Rosati spent last year in the midfield where she scooped up 24 ground balls, the most among all returning field players. She was also responsible for eight caused turnovers. Castelein caused nine turnovers and snatched 16 ground balls.
The Buckeyes have one of the best young goaltenders in the nation in Jill Rizzo. The sophomore finished last season with 183 saves, second best among all freshmen in the NCAA. That total also came in at tenth place all-time for a Big Ten goaltender in a single season. She led the Big Ten with 52 ground balls, and finished eighth in the nation with 10.76 saves per game.
And The Captains Of The 2018 Squad Are…
Senior Anna Seanor joins Wood, Rosati and Rizzo as the captains of the 2018 OSU women’s lacrosse team. Seanor helped lead the 2017 defense to a Big Ten leading 18.65 ground balls per game. In addition to her previously mentioned stats, Wood also finished the 2017 season at fourth place in the Big Ten in both goals per game, and draw controls per game. Rosati also had five points from four goals and an assist in addition to her defensive efforts. Rizzo, the only non-senior amongst the captains, made an immediate impact on the team in her freshman season. The goaltender started 16 games for the Buckeyes her 3.06 ground balls per game ranked 23rd in the nation.
About The Midshipmen
No. 10 Navy went to the Final Four last season before falling in the national semifinal. The Midshipmen have a pair of All-Americans on their squad in Jenna Collins on the First Team and sophomore Kelly Larkin on the Third Team. Julia Collins and Blake Smith earned All-American honorable mention selections as well.
Ohio State looks to even the all-time series with Navy this weekend. The Buckeyes dropped their only previous matchup with the Midshipmen, 9-8, back in 2011.
