COLUMBUS, Ohio – Freshman Liza Hernandez has been named the Big Ten’s Freshman of the Week in recognition of her performance in Monday’s win over Vermont, the conference office announced Tuesday.
The newcomer from New Albany, Ohio, led the Buckeyes with three goals, including two at a critical juncture in the game, and also added an assist, a ground ball and a draw control in the 13-9 victory.
She scored her first collegiate goal at the 15:33 mark of the first half to tie the game at 3-3 and ignite a 7-0 Ohio State run. She also notched an assist at the 5:13 mark when she found Molly Wood for her second goal.
Then in the second half, with Ohio State clinging to a one-goal lead, Hernandez scored two goals in the span of 31 seconds at 11:22 and 10:51 to give Ohio State an 11-8 lead, sparking a 4-0 run by the Buckeyes to help secure the win down the stretch.
Ohio State hits the road for its next game at Jacksonville Sunday in the Sunshine State. Game time is 1 p.m. ET and will be streamed live on ESPN3.com.
