COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's lacrosse fell to No. 2 Florida 13-7 Saturday afternoon at Dizney Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. The Buckeyes sit at 3-5 on the season and start the ALC slate in the hole, 0-1, while the Gators remain undefeated at 13-0 and 1-0 in the conference.
The teams combined for just four goals in the first half with Gottlick striking first for the Buckeyes with a free-position score at 20:09. Ohio State held onto the lead for 11:17 of game action until the Gators closed out the period with a 3-0 run to take the 3-1 lead into halftime. DeScenza came up with six saves in the stanza with one coming on a free-position opportunity for Florida.
Attackers were unleashed in the second half as the Gators built a 9-3 over the first 12 minutes of the period. Mary Kate Facchina and Gottlick each scored in that stretch and set Ohio State up four of the next six goals of the contest. Chase had all three of hers in a 10-minute span in the second half, helping the Buckeyes close the gap to four, at 10-6, with 7:13 to play.
The Gators' Shannon Gilroy scored two down the stretch, however, to give her team the final six-goal advantage. She ended the day with a game-high five goals in the win and teammates Kitty Cullen and Brittany Dashiell had a hat trick apiece. Together, they led Florida in out-shooting Ohio State 33-14. The Gators also finished on top in draw controls (13-9) and groundballs (22-10).
The Gators had won each of their previous 12 games by an average of 9.7 goals with only five being decided by six or fewer tallies. This was the closest contest for the reigning ALC champion since March 9 and a 14-9 win over Dartmouth.
Ohio State continues ALC play with fourth-ranked Northwestern at 6:30 p.m. ET Wednesday at Lakeside Field in Evanston in the first of three BTN-televised contests this season. Mike Wolf and Kara Kentz will call the conference showdown live on BTN. The Wildcats are 7-1 on the season, up 2-0 in the ALC race and off until they host the Buckeyes next week.
The next home game is 11 a.m. Saturday, March 30 when Ohio State meets Hofstra in the opener of a doubleheader with the OSU men's team vs. Loyola.
