COLUMBUS, Ohio - Alayna Markwordt posted a season-high tying nine points as the No. 12-ranked Ohio State women's lacrosse team defeated Canisius 14-11 Sunday afternoon at Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. The Buckeyes improved to 6-1 on the season, while the Griffs fall to 2-5 overall.
Markwordt, a candidate for the 2012 Tewaaraton Trophy, had three goals and six assists to notch her fourth career outing with nine or more points, while Gabby Capuzzi and Jackie Cifarelli combined for 10 of the team's 14 total goals, scoring five apiece.
The Griffs jumped out to a 4-1 lead over the first seven-plus minutes of action, but the Buckeye senior captains - Markwordt, Capuzzi and Kirsten Donahue - took control and all scored consecutively to even up the contest at 4-all with 19:41 to play in the first half.
Canisius would once again pull ahead, building an 8-5 lead before Ohio State battled back to head into the break with a 9-8 advantage. Cifarelli's first of the day was the equalizer which made it 8-all, setting up the freshman from Rockville Center, N.Y., to score five of Ohio State's final seven goals of the contest.
The Buckeyes came out of the half with a lead it would not relinquish. They went ahead 12-8 over the opening 15:30 of the second period before swapping goals until the scoreboard read 13-11, Ohio State, with 6:12 left on the clock.
Cifarelli would add her fifth and final score at 3:03, after which Canisius pulled its goalie in favor of an extra field player; however, a timely caused turnover by Donahue and a save by rookie goalie Tori DeScenza with :03 remaining kept the Griffs from any further scoring.
DeScenza finished the day with 10 saves, her second double-digit effort of the season. Canisius out-shot the Buckeyes 29-22 on the day and had a narrow 14-13 advantage in draw controls. The Griffs also finished atop the groundball count, 16-11.
Ohio State returns to action at 3 p.m. Monday at St. Bonaventure. The Scarlet and Gray will then return home and open up the ALC slate at 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Florida in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
