COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 10th-ranked Ohio State women's lacrosse team lost its first game of the 2012 season, falling to No. 14 Notre Dame 16-7 Sunday afternoon at Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes drop to 5-1 on the season, while the Irish improve to 3-0 on their season.
Notre Dame jumped out to a 4-0 lead over the first nine minutes of action before Gabby Capuzzi put the Buckeyes on the board with a free-position goal at 19:23 and Markwordt added a second just over two minutes later to cut the margin in half. Momentum shifted back in favor of the Irish, however, as they pulled ahead 8-2 until Jennifer Porrettoand Donahue closed out scoring for the period to head into the intermission with an 8-4 score.
The Irish built their lead to 13-5 in the second half, the five-goal run broken up by a score from Donahue off a Markwordt assist at 26:02. Kaila Gottlick and Kelly Beckereach added scores down the stretch, but Notre Dame's continued pressure led the Irish to the 16-7 win.
Notre Dame was led by Megan Sullivan, Lindsay Powell, Jaimie Morrison and Kaitlyn Brosco with three goals apiece, while Maggie Tamasitis assisted on five of the team's tallies. The Irish goalie Ellie Hilling made 16 saves in the win, including nine in the first half. Ohio State had the advantage in shots (29-26) and draw controls (15-9) with the teams finishing with an even 18 in groundballs.
The Buckeyes now take two weeks off before returning to action in a pair of games in the Empire State. Ohio State will travel to Canisius for a Sunday, March 18 contest before continuing on to St. Bonaventure for a game Monday, March 19. The next home game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24 against No. 4 Florida, the ALC opener for both teams.
