CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Ohio State University women’s lacrosse team tried to mount a comeback against the University of Cincinnati Bearcats on Monday, but could not finish the rally as it fell, 17-12, at Gettler Stadium Monday evening.
For the second straight game, the Buckeyes scored first on a goal from Lauren Sherry. Cincinnati responded quickly to tie it on a goal from Taylor Gysin, and then took the lead on a goal from McKenna Rushford. That lead would not hold for long as Baley Parrott scored to knot things up at 2-2. Rushford scored again, followed by a goal from Monica Borzillo, to kick-start a 4-0 run for the Bearcats. Sam Mlkvy tacked on a goal, and Rushford scored her third goal of the game to give UC a 6-2 lead. Back-to-back goals from Molly Wood cut into the Cincinnati lead, but the Bearcats finished the half on a 3-to-1 run to take a 9-5 lead into halftime.
OSU opened the second with a Parrott goal to cut the lead to three, 9-6, but UC used a 4-0 run to push its lead to seven, 13-6. Back-to-back goals from Sherry and Meghan Matey made it 13-8 with 15:18 left in the game, but Cincinnati scored three unanswered goals to go up 16-8. As the seconds ticked away, Wood scored two more goals to keep OSU in it. Katie Burgee and Liza Hernandez got in on the scoring to push the rally forward, but there just was not enough time left on the clock for the Buckeyes to finish the comeback as Ohio State fell to Cincinnati, 17-12.
Wood finished with four goals, and four draw controls. Parrott scored two goals, three draw controls, scooped up a pair of ground balls and caused two turnovers. Sherry also scored two goals, both on free position shots. Hernandez tallied one goal, two assists, four ground balls and four draw controls on the evening. Mackenzie Maring also snagged four ground balls, while Erika Keselman came away with three ground balls.
The Buckeyes get 10 days to recoup and prepare for their next game on where they’ll take on the Binghamton University Bearcats. That game is set for a 4 p.m. start on Friday, March 9.
