COLUMBUS, Ohio- The No. 10 Ohio State women's hockey team used a four goal second period to skate past the Bemidji State Beavers Friday night at the OSU Ice Rink.
Ohio State scored four goals in a span of 7:41 en route to the 4-1 victory. Shots on goal were in favor of the Buckeyes 31-30 in the game.
Redshirt junior goaltender Chelsea Knapp picked up her sixth win of the season between the pipes, stopping 29 of 30 shots on goal.
Following a scoreless opening period in which each team put eight shots on goal, sophomore forward Taylor Kuehl beat Bemidji State goaltender Abby Ryplanski to give the Buckeyes a one goal lead, 1:20 into period two. The goal was the third for Kuehl in the last three games and her fifth on the season. Assists on the score went to sophomores Danielle Gagne and Kari Schmitt.
Senior forward Minttu Tuominen found the back of the net at the 3:12 mark of the second after being set up by fellow senior Tina Hollowell. The goal was number three for Tuominen. On the play Bemidji State was called for a slashing penalty which gave the Buckeyes a power play immediately following the goal. Ohio State took advantage of the extra skater as freshman forward Julia McKinnon scored at 4:02 of the period to make it 3-0. Kari Schmitt tallied another assist on the goal, her second of the night, with the second assist going to junior Ally Tarr.
The leading goal scorer for Ohio State, senior forward Paige Semenza, recorded her eighth goal of the season at 9:01 to put the Buckeyes up four goals. Senior Hokey Langan and freshman Cara Zubko were credited with the assists. With the assist, Langan moves into sole possession of sixth place on the all-time assists list at Ohio State with 66 career assists.
The Beavers would answer back with one goal of their own at the 14:36 mark of the second period on a goal from Natasha Kostenko. Assists on the goal went to Emily Erickson and MacKenzie Thurston. Shots in the second period were 18-10 in favor of Ohio State.
Bemidji State outshot the Buckeyes 12-5 in the scoreless third period. The Beavers finished the game with four penalties to Ohio State's five. The Buckeyes had the one power play goal in four opportunities, while the Beavers went 0-5 on the power play attack.
No. 10 Ohio State (6-3-0, 4-3-0 WCHA) and Bemidji State (2-4-1, 1-3-1 WCHA) will play again Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink with the puck set to drop at 4:07 p.m.
