COLUMBUS, Ohio- The No. 10 Ohio State women's hockey team upset No. 6 North Dakota Friday night, 5-3, at the OSU Ice Rink.
"We are very happy to get the result in our favor tonight," Nate Handrahan, head women's hockey coach, said. "North Dakota is a great team that gave us all that we could handle. I expect them to come out even harder tomorrow."
The Buckeyes scored two in the first and two in the second to take a 4-0 lead into the final period. North Dakota stormed back with three in the third period before senior forward Paige Semenza iced the game for Ohio State with an empty net goal. Semenza led the way with her first career hat trick and now has 11 points this season to lead the team.
Redshirt junior goaltender Chelsea Knapp stopped 32 of 35 shots she faced and improved to 5-0-0 this season. It is the first time in program history that the Buckeyes have started the season with five straight wins.
Freshman forward Julia McKinnon got the scoring started for Ohio State 7:59 into the opening period with her second career goal. Juniors Annie Svedin and Ally Tarr assisted McKinnon on the score. Semenza scored her first of the night at the 9:13 mark of the first period after being set up by fellow seniors Hokey Langan and Minttu Tuominen.
Semenza found the back of the net for the second time at 17:28 of the second period. An assist on the goal went to Langan. With the assist, Langan moved into a tie for sixth all-time for assists at Ohio State (65) with former Buckeye Emma Laaksonen (2001-04).
Senior Tina Hollowell scored for the third time this season at 18:42 of the second with assist going to Tuominen and Svedin. Svedin is second on the team with eight points.
UND came back strong in the third period with goals from Tanja Eisenschmid, Jocelyne Lamoureux and Andrea Dalen before Semenza sealed it with her empty net goal with 20 seconds remaining.
Ohio State (5-0-0, 3-0-0 WCHA) and North Dakota (1-2-0, 1-2-0 WCHA) will play again Saturday afternoon at the OSU Ice Rink with the puck set to drop at 4:07 p.m.
