COLUMBUS, Ohio — After a big weekend at Minnesota, a pair of freshmen earned Western Collegiate Hockey Association honors this week as Emma Maltais was named the Offensive Player of the Week, while Tatum Skaggs was selected as the Rookie of the Week on Tuesday.
Maltais scored four points in the Buckeye’s series with the Golden Gophers over the weekend, netting one goal and three assists. Her lone goal of the weekend came in the first period of Saturday’s game, but it was a crucial moment in the game. Minnesota jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Maltais goal cut that lead in half, and helped keep OSU in the game that ended in a 5-5 shootout win for the Buckeyes.
Skaggs, who won the WCHA Offensive honors last week, continued her blistering start with a four-point weekend, notching two goals and two assists. Both goals and one assist came in the 5-5 game on Saturday, where she would also score one of the shootout goals that secured the extra point for the Buckeyes.
“I’m very happy that both Emma and Tatum are earning recognition for their stellar play so far,” said Head Coach Nadine Muzerall. “We expected them to produce at this level, but maybe not this early in the year. It’s promising to see this against a team like Minnesota, now we just have to hope that they can keep it up as we get deeper into WCHA play. Offense always gets the attention when it comes to these awards, but we’re talking about complete players here, Emma and Tatum give their all on both the offensive and defensive ends, and that’s what stands out to our staff.”
The No. 7 Buckeyes host No. 5 Minnesota Duluth for a series this weekend. Game one of the series is scheduled for as 6:07 p.m. ET start on Friday, while the finale will get underway at 3:07 p.m. ET on Saturday.
