COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s hockey team kicks off its 2013-14 campaign with an exhibition matchup with the Toronto Junior Aeros of the PWHL this Saturday, Sept. 21. The game is set for a 2:07 p.m. start at the OSU Ice Rink.

What’s New in 2013-14

The Buckeyes return 18 letterwinners from a season ago to go along with five new faces this season. Ohio State received votes in both national Division I women’s hockey preseason polls that were released within the last week (USCHO; USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine).

Head coach Nate Handrahan enters his third season at the helm of the program and is looking to build off a 19-win season, second most in program history for a single season, and a trip to the WCHA Final Face-Off.

Two new assistant coaches and a new volunteer assistant join Handrahan’s staff for 2013-14. Assistant coach Carson Duggan comes to Ohio State after spending the last two seasons as head women’s hockey coach at Trinity College (CT). Keith Maurice spent the last ten years as an assistant coach at Norwich University before coming to the Buckeyes as an assistant. Mikhael Horowitz enters his first season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Buckeyes after spending a year as an assistant coach and personal development coach for the Vierumaki A Juniors, a team located at the Finnish National Sports Institute in Vierumaki, Finland.

Captains Revealed

Redshirt senior goaltender Chelsea Knapp has been named captain of the 2013-14 Ohio State women’s hockey team, head coach Nate Handrahan announced Tuesday. Knapp becomes just the second goalie in program history to don the ‘C’ and the first since the 2001-02 season when Melissa Glaser wore it.

Redshirt junior defender Kara Gust and junior defender Kari Schmitt will lead the Buckeyes as assistant captains.

"I am excited to announce this year’s captains,” Handrahan said. “Each of them will lead in their own unique way. They are a hard-working group that will serve our team well."
