COLUMBUS, OhioNate Handrahan, head coach of Ohio State women’s hockey, has announced the team captains for the 2012-13 season.

Senior forward Hokey Langan will serve as captain. The Chatham, Ontario native has played in 100 games for the Buckeyes over the last three seasons. Langan has 105 career points on 46 goals and 59 assists. She was named WCHA Rookie of the Year following the 2009-10 season, in which she was also the WCHA scoring champion. Currently seventh on the career scoring list for Ohio State women’s hockey, Langan also has the sixth most career goals for the Buckeyes.

“Hokey is very deserving of being named this year’s captain,” Handrahan said. “She has the respect of her teammates, as well as the coaching staff, on and off the ice. She is a player who is not only talented, but bleeds Scarlet and Gray for her team. She will do an outstanding job.”

Three seniors will serve as assistant captains this season, forwards Paige Semenza, Tina Hollowell and Minttu Tuominen.

Semenza, who served as assistant captain last season, is a product of Pittston, Pa. She has played in 102 games and has a career total of 40 points, with 16 goals and 24 assists. The two-time Ohio State Scholar-Athlete was named to the WCHA All-Academic team in 2010-11 and was an Academic All-Big Ten at-large selection that same year.

“Paige is a consummate worker inside our locker room,” Handrahan said. “She has dedicated herself to excellence on and off the ice, and she lives her life the right way for Buckeye hockey. Having been an assistant captain last season, I expect her to continue to grow as a leader.”

Hollowell, who hails from Clinton Township, Mich., was an Academic All-Big Ten selection and an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete in 2010-11. Playing in 109 career games for the Scarlet and Gray she has recorded 26 points on eight goals and 18 assists.

“Tina is our heartbeat, our inspirational leader,” Handrahan said. “She has matured in her time here as a leader, as a player and as a person. She is the kind of warrior that we need leading us each night.”

Tuominen is a native of Espoo, Finland. Last season she was named a WCHA Scholar-Athlete and has twice been named an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete. Tuominen has also previously been named to the WCHA All-Academic team and been a Academic All-Big Ten selection. She won a bronze medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver as a member of the Finnish national team. Tuominen has 30 career points for the Buckeyes, including 10 goals and 20 assists, in 87 games.

“If there was one phrase to sum up Minttu, I would say quiet excellence,” Handrahan said. “She has committed herself to be great everyday and leads by example. She has played at the highest levels of our sport in the Olympics and has seen firsthand what it takes to succeed. She is consistent in her approach every day.”

The Buckeyes will hold their first official practice on Saturday (Sept. 22) and open the 2012-13 campaign with a non-conference series against Lindenwood, September 28-29, at the OSU Ice Rink.
